Celebrate Library Card Sign up Month with the Sioux Center Public Library

The Sioux Center Public Library is celebrating national library card sign up month this September with the American Library Association.  

We’re inviting you to discover the fantastic benefits of owning a library card, by signing up for your own card at the Sioux Center Public Library this September.  

We are always excited to welcome new library users to our library and we are offering free card replacement and half off overdue fines. 

The ALA started hosting Library Card Sign Up month in1987 as a response to Secretary of Education William Bennett’s statement, “Let’s have a campaign … Every child should obtain a library card and use it.” 

Since 2008, the ALA has chosen a figure from pop culture to be the ‘honorary chair’ of Library Card Sign Up month, with libraries around the nation using the figure to promote the library. 

This year’s host of National Library Card month festivities is Optimus Prime from Transformers. Optimus’s slogan, “there’s more than meets the eye,” showcases the ways library services go beyond books, and highlights the other services a library card can give patrons access to like research assistance, language learning and job help. 

In honor of library card sign up month, The Sioux Center Public Library is offering free card replacement and half off all overdue fines. (This does not include fees such as costs for copies or charges for lost items.) 

We encourage all community members who don’t already have a library card to sign up for one in the library. All you need to make a library card is a photo ID, and proof of your current address. We can make library cards in Spanish too! 

All library patrons get access to: 

• Our entire physical collection of books, movies and audiobooks 

• Our library of things, including lawn games, board games, puzzles, video game consoles, baking equipment, technology, power tools, microscopes, telescopes, Legos, science kits, projector and more 

• Access to in library use products like our computers, printers, fax machine, translation machine and meeting rooms 

Sioux Center and Rural Sioux Country patrons get additional access to our online resources including: 

• Our entire digital collection including eAudiobooks, eBooks, access to certain streaming channels, movies, music, language learning software, and more
